Depends: Today, there is often phase one and phase two orthdontics where the dentist tries to help guide the growth of the jaw to create room for all the teeth to erupt into. Phase two is some time later when the braces are used to properly align the teeth. Phase one can start before a child is 10 years old.

Brace age: There is no set age for braces, it's completely individualized. Some things are better to be fixed at an earlier age. If you wait too late then sometimes things that could have been fixed are more difficult later on and may require extractions and/or surgery. This is why the american association of orthodontists recommends an evaluation by age 7.
