See below: Leptospirosis is caused by a bacteria (spirochete) called leptospirosis interrogans. It is mainly a tropical disease but does occur in temperate climates too. It can have a variable course from presentation as a subclinical illness followed by antibody response and a self-limiting infection, or a severe, potentially fatal illness with multiorgan failure. Leptospirosis: Leptospirosis is caused when a bacterium (Leptospira interrogans) which is stored in animals kidneys is released through their urine & contaminates soil or water. If you drank infected water you could become infected. It can also enter your body through breaks in your skin, your nose, mouth & genitals. In rare cases it has been passed through breastfeeding and sex. It can be ID'ed wi antibodies.
