How can psittacosis be transmitted?

Inhalation: The primary route of infection is via inhalation of aerosolized dried bird droppings or if respiratory secretions from sick birds are inhaled. You can get the disease by handling sick birds or even through transient exposure to sick birds. Human to human transmission is rare.

Psittacosis: Psittacosis (AKA parrot fever or ornithosis) is an infectious dz caused by Chlamydia psittaci bacteria & can be contracted from parrots, macaws, cockatiels & other bird species. It can remain alive for weeks in waste materials at the floor of a birdcage. Handling infected birds or inhaling dust from their droppings can transmit the infection. This can occur with pets or birds in slaughterhouses.
