A member asked:

What are some differences between benadryl (diphenhydramine) and claritin?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Side-effect profile: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is one of the first generation anti-histamines which cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore causes sedation. It also has a significant drying effect in many patients. Claritin (loratadine) is a second generation and does not cross into the brain and therefore is considered non-sedating. It is usually less drying as well.
