Depression: In old days and still in existence in undercivilized countries east, nature/nurture is utilized, kinda like therapeutic communities where patients are in the open space interacting with families away from city life and being productive with minimal stress of modern living. Nowadays, traditional chinese medicine & aeurvedic indian tools are spreading to our culture. Results at best are mixed.

Many: St john's wort is an antidepressant herb. Sunlight, exercise, good nutrition, and social interaction can ease depression. Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation might help. Spiritual healing ceremonies and rituals appear to help some sufferers. Certainly psychotherapy helps. It depends on how you define 'alternative'.
