Nope : It's usually beyond their scope of practice & depending what specific high-risk condition you have, you should see either a mfm or an OB experienced in your care. It's possible that a certified nurse midwife (cnm) can help with routine care (timed labs, routine exams, etc) but only when working with that OB doc and only when that specialist is available 24/7. It works well for our practice.

Depends? : High risk pregnancy is a vague term and without knowing the exact problems with a pregnancy this is hard to answer. Questions you may ask your midwife-- is the midwife a certified nurse midwife? Does the cnm work together with the appropriate phyician backup? Can you have a consultation with a physician or perinatologist?
