Can an overactive thyroid be treated with anything other than surgery?

Yes: You can have radioactive iodine which is picked up by the thyroid and burns the thyroid tissue without the need for surgery. It has been in use for a very long time and proven to be very safe. In children since 1971 with no adverse effects on reproduction. If a patient fails to get the hyperthyroidism under control with meds that is the best option.

Hypethyroid: Yes there are several oral anti-thyroid medications fda approved for hyperthyroidism. Failure to respond or go into remission , usually necessitates either thyroid surgery or radio-iodine ablation.
