Have it checked: This is more likely a cyst that arose from a hair follicle or oil gland that can readily be explained on exam or be simply removed. It is not as likely to be a cancer, but you should have it checked out.

Probably not cancer: There are lots of different things that can cause lumps in the skin. Most are not cancerous. You are doing the right thing by having it checked out by your doctor. Sometimes a biopsy or an excision is helpful to prove it isn't cancerous.
