Huge Problem: It is actually a huge problem- especially in the elderly. In the elderly and in the teenage age group- suicide is one of the highest causes of death. The problem also is many do not want to speak about it. Our emergency department actually screens for this on every patient to see if anyone needs help- but is not asking at that time.

One reason for the: Concern is that many in the united states value the life of an individual person. I lived in japan where suicide is in some situations considered honorable. Consider kamikaze suicide attacks in which a pilot gave his life. In some situations in which a woman is considered to have brought dishonor to her family - suicide may be encouraged (seen in a # of cultures).
