Has anyone had a gastroscopy examination? is it with general anesthesia?

Just sedation: Gastroscopy is an endoscopic exam of your stomach and is generally done under light sedation on an outpatient basis. Modern gastroscope is small and flexible - size of penne pasta. It is also possible to have it done in the doctors office with just topical anesthesia.

Endoscopy is sedated: It is common, particularly in the atlantic states, to undergo mac sedation for your endoscopic procedure. Prior to undergoing the brief (3-5 minute) test, an anesthesiologist will deliver by IV a medication like Propofol to help you sleep. Yes, this is the "michael jackson drug", but in the right hands and with the right monitoring it is very safe & a very pleasant experience for patients.

No: It is usually done with deep sedation. You will however, not remember the procedure, but you will not be completely asleep.
