Yes: Versed is one of the many benzodiazepine class of drugs used to combat anxiety and sedate. Other drugs in this class are valium, xanax, (alprazolam) and ativan. If used properly and if the patient is continuously monitored it is a very effective drug to use for pre-op or intra-op sedation in dentistry.

Yes, but...: The use of versed (midazolam), a short-acting benzodiazepine, is generally safe if used appropriately, in proper dosage, by qualified personnel. It is quite effective in inducing sedation and amnesia. It is important that the doctor administering this medication have the proper credentials, which signify that he has had proper training for use of sedative medications.

Yes: Versed is a benzodiazepine that relaxes and sedates anxious dental patients. It also has an amnesic effect. As with all sedations, the dentist should be well trained in treating the rare side effects that may occur--especially respiratory depression. The dentist should have the appropriate training and the right equipment to monitor the patient while under sedation.
