Yes: Tonsillitis may be viral in origin. Therefore the patient's immune system will result in a natural resolution of the sore throat. Be patient. In adults, particularly, most upper respiratory infections are of viral origin and an antibiotic may be necessary in only 2% of cases. Be patient, and if you get worse after 5 days or not better in 10 days, empirically, an antibiotic should be used.

sx relief (no cure): For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see physician & get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day. Try thyme tea.
