Dental bone grafting: how long to eat normally?

Depends: It depends on how extensive the surgery was and where in the mouth it was done. Generally speaking though, i would recommend a soft or liquid diet for a couple of weeks. Also be very gentle using a tooth brush in the area, you don't want to dislodge a stitch or membrane too early.

Depends: There are several types of bone grafting. It is best to avoid chewing anything hard or crunchy at the area of bone grafting. We advise people to chew on the other side if possible. The bone can be ready to accept an implant from 3 months after placement to 6 months after placement. An x-ray will show if the bone is ready. Using care and caution is the best path to bone grafting success.

2-3 days: Depending on how extensive the grafting was, it shoiuld heal at near the same rate as an extraction. Once the soft tissue closes, you should be pretty comfortable eating regular foods. For the first couple days, the site may be sore and the wound still open. The site will heal faster if a membrane was placed and the sutures closed the wound.

5-7 days : I generally recommend chewing on the opposite side and you can resume a normal diet after 3 days. If this is not possible them after 7 days should be ok. Start slowly and introduce harder and harder foods to see how you are doing. Don't do it all at once. Good luck.
