Who qualifies for invisalign?

32 doctors weighed in across 14 answers

Teens-adults: Invisalign can be used to treatanyone from teenagers to adults. The limiting factors are what corrections need to be done (not any/every ortho case qualifies for invisalign) and compliance of patient. For this reason i tend not to do invisalign on teenagers under 18, but if you/child is very cooperative, it can be used for as young as 16 yr old (again, depends on what is to be corrected).

Modest malocclusions: Invisalign is an attractive option for orthodontic therapy, because it is nearly invisible while in use, and its removable nature allows maintenance of normal oral hygiene. However, it is a methodology that is best for minor bite discrepancies. It is not particularly good for correction of open bites, or for severe arch length inadequacies where extractions are necessary.

Invisalign: If your question is who is a good candidate for treatment with invisalign then the answer is most people. It's just another way to move the teeth like braces. There are however some limitations and you should get a consult with an orthodontist to discuss whether or not it's right for you.

Diagnosis required: The only way to accurately assess whether clear aligner treatment is appropriate for your particular situation is to make an appointment with a licensed orthodontic specialist for an evaluation. Clear aligners can certainly be used for a wide range of orthodontic problems.

Some teens and adult: Invisalign is an orthodontic appliance with some limitations. Depending upon your particular case either may be better for you. You should go see an orthodontist to see what your options are.

Depends: On the case. I would consult with an orthodontist to see if you are a candidate.

Adults ; teens: Qualified invisalign patients include both adults and teens. However, the candidacy of an individual depends upon the degree of difficulty of the case and the capacity of the patient to cooperate in wearing the aligners 21-22 hours per day. Experience has demonstrated that teens often cooperate better than adults, especially when their cases are selected carefully by an experienced practitioner.

Choice: Clear aligners such as Invisalign are not a substitute for braces. They each have different advantages and disadvantages, with braces still being the gold standard. Everyone's different. Best advice is to see a fully qualified Orthodontic Specialist for an initial exam (usually free). He/she can tell you if you are an Invisalign candidate.

That depends: Regular braces are attached to your teeth. They are harder to clean but you don't have to worry about losing them. Invisalign is removable. This makes cleaning your teeth easier, but if you lose them or forget to put them in they will not work. So which is better partially depends on the patient's personally. Also regular braces can correct some conditions that invisalign can not.

Depends: See your Orthodontist for full evaluation to determine the cause and degree of your problem. Only then can the determination be made if invisalign will be suitable for you. Often a combination is most effective. Good Luck.

See your dentist: or orthodontist. Only your dentist or orthodontist will be able to tell you whether or not you qualify for invisalign treatment. Getting Invisalign can be a big commitment of time, money and effort. See your dentist for consultation and proper assessment.

Based on case: Invisalign is great for certain case types (e.g., closing gaps) and typically works best in mild to moderate, but not extreme cases. Whether Invisalign is a good option can only be determined when a reliable & ethical orthodontist (by this I mean do go to a prefered provider, but avoid Invisalign only shops as they see every square peg fitting that round hole) determines they can get great result

Diagnostic criteria: Invisalign is helpful in reducing many malocclusions, but are not the equivalent of braces. Braces can do more, but Invisalign more esthetic. Orthodontist more skilled than GP, yet both charge about the same. Best advice: See a fully qualified Orthodontic Specialist (initial exam usually free) to determine the best course of treatment to resolve your unique problems.
