Screening test: When a health care professional performs a gynecologic exam, cells from the vaginal and from the cervix are collected - when put onto a slide, that smear (of cells) is examined. Its also called a pap smear. The purpose is to screen for pre-cancer and cancer. Certain infections can also be detected.
