Western eyelid: Eyelids which have a higher crease are said to be double eyelids. In caucasians, the eyelid crease is 7-10mm above the eyelashes and when open there are two distinct portions of the lid separated by a crease. In Asian eyelids, the crease is generally much lower, often so low that even when open, the crease disappears by the eyelashes. Double eyelid surgery creates a higher crease.

Upper eyelid crease: Double eyelid refers to a crease of the upper eyelid. This crease is normally present in caucasian eyelid, but typically absent in asian eyelid. The upper eyelid crease also changes with age. Surgery to create a double eyelid is very common in asian culture. Double eyelid surgery recreates the adhesion between the underlying eyelid muscle and the overlying eyelid skin.
