What is the medical term for "orphans disease"?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Uncommon illness: An "orphan disease" is the term commonly applied to rare afflictions that affect only a few patients. This produces a situation where it is so expensive to try to develop a treatment drug & get it thru the fda, that few if any companies will try because they can never get their investment back in sales.
