Several reasons: Doxepin is an older antidepressant. People may take this for its antidepressant effects. It could be given in lower doses to help with sleep or anxiety -- often along with a newer ssri antidepressant like zoloft (sertraline) or prozac. It can be especially helpful for people whose anxiety manifests in gastrointestinal discomfort. Recently, the fda approved a new, low dose formulation for primary insomnia.
