A lot : If you only sleep a few hours when you need 8 you will feel exhausted all day and probably have trouble functioning, the older you are the worse it is tolerated. The closer to 8 hours you slept the better the lack of sleep is tolerated and the better the function both at a job or school and in social situations and at home.
