Dr. Todd Sisto answered

Specializes in Plastic Surgery

Confession massage and pharmacologic: Pharmacologic intervention. The simplest thing is to get 3m paper tape and keep it on the scars this helps especially in the early phases of scar maturation. Later one can use almost any lubricant or better yet Mederma and massage the scar frequently silicone backed tape or silicone gel are also effective but more of a nuisance. If the scars happen to get sick and ropey enough it may warrant injection with cortisone-like drugs.

Breast scar reductio: To help minimize breast surgery scars, support the tissue by wearing a bra, avoid trauma, and avoid early aggressive sex and high impact exercise. Twice daily massage (or more often) can be very helpful. Dr. Karen vaniver breast and body recovery serum was designed to help reduce scarring after surgery. Its most active ingredient is castor oil, which is an anti-inflammatory agent.

Depends...: Your plastic surgeon will have his/her preferences/recommendations when it comes to treatment of incision lines and scars. Some surgeons prefer the use of tape, massage, and/or the use of silicone-based products. For “abnormal scars” the use of silicone-based products, steroid injections, and/or scar revision surgery may be indicated.
