Thyroid enlargement: A large thyroid is a problem that should be investigated. A sonogram or cat scan may be needed to determine the cause of the problem. Although thyroid enlargement is often benign, it may be a sign of a more serious problem such as cancer. If nodules are present, a biopsy may be needed.

Large thyroid: An enlarged thyroid usually represents an inflammatory response to infection, pregnancy, exogenous iodine ingestion or hypothyroidism. Additionally, this could be a nodular goiter which is usually benign. Occasionally a large thyroid could represent a malignancy. In any case, a goiter should be evaluated by the skillful hands of an endocrinologist as well as with a thyroid ultrasound.
