Yes: It is thought to be due to the immune system becoming overactive and misguided after it responds to an infection.

Reactive arthritis: Reactive arthritis typically is triggered by a genital tract or intestinal infection, usually (not always) certain people who are genetically predisposed to it, called HLA B27 (which you can google for more information). Below age 30, the most common trigger is chlamydial infection (an STD). In children and older folks, intestinal infections are more common. Some cases have no obvious trigger.
