Polymyositis (PM): There are many alternative treaments for polymyositis (pm). They are similar to the therapies use for other autoimmune diseases and include: oral steroids, intravenous immunoglobululins, tacrolimus (prograf) or biologic therapies such as embrel or rituxan (rituximab).

Yes: Yes, if you mean alternative medications to steroids. Corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment for polymyositis (pm) but other immunosuppressive medications such as methotrexate, etanercept, and others can be used, especially if it becomes difficult to reduce the steroid dose after the initial response. There is no role for herbal remedies or diet in reducing the intense inflammation of pm.
