Inability to breathe: Polymyositis is immune injury to skeletal muscle, leading to weakness. If left untreated, it can affect the diaphragm which helps you breathe. This can cause significant shortness of breath and the terrible feeling of suffocation. This is rarely seen though with the medications we have.
