Stay dry: Jock itch is caused by a skin fungus. Fungus likes moist skin. Baby powder may help keep dry, avoid tight clothes. Switch to boxer type underwear. Anti-fungal spays may help also. Get out of wet clothes (bathing suits, gym clothes) as soon as possible.

Recurrent jock itch: Jock itch is another name for a fungal infection, tinea cruris. Recurrences can happen if it is incompletely treated or if, for example, you have a fungal infection on your feet or toenails. It is possible for that infection to be transmitted by pulling on underwear or shorts. Also, keeping the area dry is important but avoid powders containing cornstarch which can make a fungal infection worse.
