A member asked:

What are the biochemical reasons that galt1 & galactokinase deficiency lead to inability to feed and jaundice?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Def of enzymes: I due to deficiency of enzymes needed to metabolise galactose.Lactose the sugar in the milk breaks down to glucose and galactose in the body, and galactose is metabolized by liver enzymes that converts galactose by\galactose1 phosphate &uridyl transferase, into glucose and result accumulation of galactose causes liver damage. Galactokinase deficiency is less severe form of galactosemia, cause sympto.
