No: Your immune system is intact. You would have a higher risk of infection from encapsulated organisms, and is why those with splenectomy have a pneumococcal vaccine as a precaution.

Spleen's importance: The spleen helps stop infections from spreading, so losing it means one needs special attention when sick. Doctors caring for these patients should be very aware that they have been splenectomized and they should be seen any time a bacterial infection is likely. Antibiotics must be started quickly because the spleen is not there to do its normal job of preventing sepsis. Antibiotics work normally.

Immune System Intact: I agree with dr. Hoepfner. Your immune system is intact, but you are at a very small risk (.05 to 2%) for overwhelming post-splenectomy sepsis from certain organisms. Recommended vaccinations: polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine (pneumovax 23) haemophilus influenzae b vaccine (hibtiter) Meningococcal (groups a, c, y, w-135) Polysaccharide Diphtheria Toxoid Conjugate Vaccine (menactra).
