Surgery or Laser: If the scar is superficial, topical retinoic acid and a broad spectrum sunscreen may be sufficient to augment a recently developed acne scar. If the scar is old, deep, and pin point (ice pick scar), surgical excision with suture closure will be optimal. If the acne scar is broad and deep, multiple sessions with a fractionated laser would gradually improve its appearance.

See dermatologist: If your acne is quiet, see a dermatologist or plastic surgeon for treatment. Laser, microsurgery or dermabrasion can lessen the appearance of acne scars. If your acne is still active, take medications as prescribed by your doctor, then see above when things have quieted down.

Improve, not remove: You can never remove a scar, once present. However, multiple options for improving the appearance of acne scars exist. Depending on your skin and exact circumstances your facial plastic surgeon or dermatologist may recommend laser treatments (including co2, 1550 nm erbium), peels, dermabrasion, or well as topical treatments. Seek a physician with experience.
