A member asked:

Is it possible for trigger finger in the thumb to be related to carpal tunnel release?

Yes, but not likely: It is not uncommon to develop swelling in the hand after a carpal tunnel release. Sometimes swelling can affect the tendons and tendon sheath. If this occurs, triggering may develope. It may also be unrelated. Carpal tunnel syndrome (cts) and trigger finger have overlapping patient demographics. Oral/injectable steroids and therapy should relieve your symptoms.

No: If the diagnosis is truly trigger thumb then it is unlikely to be related to the carpal tunnel release. The only possibility is that the routine swelling seen after ctr might have caused swelling around the thumb flexor tendon to start the triggering. In those cases the trigger tends to resolve as swelling subsides.

Unlikely: Trigger finger and carpal tunnel syndrome are often associated with one another. While surgery can incite inflammation and symptoms of trigger finger, the conditions may arise simultaneously quite by coincidence.
