Electrical: The concentration of sodium outside and potassium inside cells is important to the resting membrane charge on the cell surface. This has implications specifically for heart muscle cells (arrhythmia) and regular muscle cells (weakness). Out of concern for the administration of anaesthetic and heart arrhythmias, this will need to be addressed before surgery.
