At least a few weeks: Mononucleosis is caused by the epstein barr virus(ebv). Most contract the virus in early childhood in an illness similar to a common cold. When the first exposure to ebv occurs in adolescence and beyond, the person gets mononucleosis. A person is most infectious in the first few weeks after the illness. Ebv remains in the body for life and can be transmitted to others through exchanging saliva.
