Not placebo: Reflux is the passage of gastric acid up through the sphincter into the esophagus. Heartburn is the symptom it produces in some people. Drinking anything will help to wash stomach acid back down into the stomach where it belongs. Even a weak and dilute acid! sometimes sips of water or chewing gum can cure it too.
