Eat=feel bad: If you have physical symptoms after eating a nominal food item, you do not tolerate it.Others may consume it with no difficulty. This might be a food dye like red #40 that can cause cramping and diarrhea, or lactose sugar in milk for those that cannot digest it. You do not have to be allergic to it to be intolerant, but if you are allergic to a food you are intolerant to that food.
