Forever?: Approximately 15-25% of patients with hepatitis C infection are able - through unknown mechanisms - to clear the virus through their own immune system. The other % have chronic (long-term) infection and could spread this for life. Bear in mind that the means of acquisition for approx 20% of people is never fully determined.

If virus is there: As long as someone has hepatitis c virus inside them (found with a hcv RNA or viral load test) they can spread hepatitis c to someone who has contact with their blood. It is important not to share needles, syringes, cookers, cotton, water, etc. In drug use. Also don't share toothbrushes, razors, nail or hair clippers. If you have a new sex partner use condoms.
