They get better: Most sore throats are due to viral infections, and antibiotics don't help. There are exceptions, such as strep throat, in which antibiotics are recommended. However, they don't really shorten the duration of illness. They just prevent complications.

Depends: The cause of the swelling in the throat needs to be identified first. Some possible causes may be an abscess/bacterial infection, tumor, etc.
