Can a person have attention deficit disorder and autism, or is add defined as not having also autism?

Unofficially, yes: Officially, the diagnosis of autism "trumps" the diagnosis of adhd, not the other way around, as your question suggests. In practice, severe adhd symptoms in children with autism are often still recognized and treated.
