Yes: Conditions occurring to the lumbar spine may slowly progress/worsen over years due to changes known as degenerative disease. There can be no specific cause (genetic) to start the degeneration of the disc complex, but injuries to the spine can be associated with the beginnings and/or progression of lumbar degenerative disease.
