A member asked:

Is a systemic infection in a one pound baby treatable?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Variable outcomes: A one-pound premature infant is very small and still developing many basic systems. All infections at such a tiny age are very serious, but newborn icus are also very highly specialized in treating these problems. Survival and long-term outcome are hard to predict, but more & more of these babies are surviving and growing up well, so don't lose hope. Baby's md & rn will know specific details- ask!
