DNA damage.: Mutations are sometimes caused by ionizing radiation (x-rays, ct-scans) applied to the maternal abdomen/pelvis during sensitive gestational periods (particularly 4-12 weeks). The actual mechanism is damage to the dna by the radiation beam.
