A member asked:

Hi, my sister had an xray and it shows that she has mild thoratic levoscoliosis. she's 28 and just gave birth about a month ago, should we be worried?

No.: Mild thoracic scoliosis should not cause any problems. If we do xrays on everyone we'll probably find a lot of mild scoliosis only evident on xrays and not causing any clinically evident problems. Note: The pregnancy did not cause the scoliosis, it existed prior to her pregnancy. Scoliosis usually does not affect pregnancy unless it's severe. Also, pregnancy does not worsen scoliosis.

Scoliosis: Levoscoliosis is the curvature of the spine to the left side of the body. Levoscoliosis has the same signs and symptoms as the classical scoliosis, but due to the location of the heart there are added health concerns due to with the left curvature in the thoracic spine (midback). The spinal column has nothing to do with the function of the heart, but this curvature can put pressure on the ribcage causing deformation, subsequently impacting functionality of the lungs and ultimately the heart.
