In general: For the first 2-8 weeks there is no weight bearing on the operated ankle. Sutures usually come out in 2 weeks. Once the surgeon lets you put weight on it and you are out of the initial splint/cast your are started on physical therapy with progressive weight bearing as tolerated. Improvement in function and swelling can occur unto 6-12 months as shown by recent studies.
