Does it hurt to get a core biopsy of the breast?

Yes, but dont fear: The core biopsy needle will cause pain like any needle can. It is a bit large than a regular needle and the biopsy site will likely be bruised for a few days, but the pain of a core biopsy will be much less than an open biopsy. Do not delay diagnosis for fear of the discomfort.

Minimal: This is done with local anesth. Once the breast is numb one should only feel pressure but no pain from the biopsy needle. Afterwards there is soreness and bruising. Most patients do fine with otc meds.

Local anesthesia is: utilized to numb the skin and depper tissues. Most patients experience some mild discomfort, some barely feel anything, and a few do report some pain. If there is pain, more anesthetic can be used. In general, the procedure is well-tolerated.
