A member asked:

Do people need laughing gas when your teeth are being taken out for braces?

Depends: It depends on how many and which teeth are to be removed, as well as the anxiety level and expectations of the patient. Many patients have primary teeth and/or erupted premolar or bicuspid teeth removed with nitrous and local anesthesia. If the teeth are impacted, most people prefer to be unaware of the procedure and choose a different type of sedation.

Recommended: Most patients that have premolars removed for braces are preteens. I usually recommend nitrous oxide, or laughing gas versus IV sedation. It takes the edge off.

Check with Surgeon: Check with the oral surgeon as to what type of anesthesia would be best for you. Depends on the teeth to be roomed and your physiologic make-up. There are lots of anesthesia choices available.
