The lungs: Thromboembolism means that some or all of a clot that formed (usually in the leg) has broken off and traveled. Generally when this occurs, it will end up in the lungs. We call this a pulmonary embolism. This can be a life threatening situation and needs to be treated emergently.

Thromboembolism: "thrombo"=clot & "embolism"=movement. So thromboebolism referred to the traveling of a clot from one portion of the body to another. When clot begins in a leg vein and "embolizes" to another part of the body, it typically travels into the lungs where it then gets lodged. This is referred to as a pulmonary embolism. It can be lethal. Other times chest pain, trouble breathing, & lung damage occur
