Not very.: Carotid endarterectomy, in qualified hands, should be problem free over 94% of the time. In some patients, the risk is even lower. Usually, the CEA operation is recommended when the risk of not doing it is higher. Surgery is far and away the safest option; complication rates are higher with other techniques.

Fantastic results: This is one of the talked about and refined operations that a vascular surgeon can do. In proper hands the stroke risk for symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals having a carotid endarterectomy is far less than medical management. At the present time this is the gold standard for carotid bifurcation disease.
