If rheumatoid: If the arthritis is autoimmune (such as rheumatoid arthritis), then the chance of a second autoimmune disease is higher. If the arthritis is osteoarthritis, there is no increased risk. Many things might trigger onset of autoimmune disease. One definite trigger is smoking.
