Slightly: There was a time that metformin was thought to be the treatment of choice for pcos & anovulation. Turns out that Clomid (clomiphene) beats metformin for this situation hands down. Yet, metformin is important for the metobolic aspects of pcos such as Insulin resistance & weight control. I've had pcos patients lose upwards of 80# using just metformin.

Slightly, if at all: Early studies suggested metformin can help conceive but more recent studies show a modest effect, if at all. Clomid (clomiphene) and Femara are still drugs of choice in pcos, with pregnitude quickly catching on.

Variable: Patients who have pcos may have multiple reasons for their infertility. All need to be addressed. Taking metformin or glucophage without testing and further evaluation has not been shown to assist in pregnancy alone. Most patients need ovulation induction as well. If weight loss is a major component, glucophage will be helpful, but not necessarily the only treatment of choice.

Yes: Metformin is commonly used to treat pcos, as it decreases Insulin resistance, a common cause for this condition. Menses tend to become more regular and it can help with ovulation, increasing the chances of pregnancy.
