Is it effective to take a xanax (alprazolam) when you have severe back pain?

Sometimes.: Although xanax (alprazolam) is not thought of as a pain medication or muscle relaxant it is an anti-anxiety drug. As such it may relax an individual and indirectly lead to muscle relaxation as anxiety and stress are reduced. In this fashion it may help reduce the pain and discomfort associated with back pain.

Possibly: Xanax (alprazolam) can work as a muscle relaxant and also relieves the anxiety that often accompanies severe pain. However, it is not a good long-term solution. Instead, see your doctor and get it treated.
