More nerve endings: The fingers have many more of the highly sensitive nerve endings than the feet.

Sensitivity: The bottom of the foot has thicker skin then most areas of the hand. Because, hands are used for more fine motion they have more tactile receptors, which while good for the purpose of work they are doing would also cause the increased sensitivity when injured.
