Yes: Acute kidney failure has the potential to improve. Nephrologists watch for this routinely. Recovery is most likely when the other organ systems have improved too.

Possibly: They likely have atn (acute tubular necrosis) from sepsis and septic shock, which does recover depending on if there was any kidney damage prior to the atn, age of the patient, and how long the patient is/was in septic shock. Most patients with atn do recover some if not most function.
